When a client tells their therapist or medical provider that they are acutely suicidal and at immediate risk of harm, hospitalization is often necessary for their safety. While we hope that hospitalization will stabilize and protect them, it can be heartbreaking to learn that the client experienced acute traumatic stress or medication-related trauma during their stay. Sadly, research shows that this is not uncommon.
