What’s predictable is preventable. We know now that the memory of childhood experience is stored in our bodies and not just our minds. From that first spark of life, experience has a profound impact on who we are and who we will become. In the past few decades, there has been an explosion of new understanding - beginning with the Adverse Childhood Experience, or “ACE” Study – about how and why adversity and trauma can reliably predict risks for mental, physical, and behavioral health. Because of recent discoveries in neuroscience and epidemiology, plus resilience studies, we can understand how protection, prevention, and resilience can profoundly improve health, safety, and productivity now and for generations to come. This session is about discovery. It’s a story of scientists who challenged themselves to think differently about the facts they could see.
Understanding ACEs: Building Self-Healing Communities begins with the neuroscience and biology behind stress and trauma, explains and explores the ACEs Study, and concludes with guidance on building resilience and self-healing communities.

ACE stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences. These are the things that happened to us when we were under the age of 18, our brains were developing, and potentially landed on us as trauma. ACEs are the leading cause of health and social problems in our nation and are the most powerful determinant of public health.
The key goal of this training is to build a common language and understanding of ACEs and the related research. Attendees will learn about brain development, toxic stress, and resiliency.
The Director of Coordination is an ACEs Master Trainer through the ACEs Indiana Coalition and the training was developed by Dr. Robert Anda, one of the two original creators of the ACEs Questionnaire, and Laura Porter.
The Building Self-Healing Communities piece of this training provides a framework for thinking about resilience and focuses primarily on attachment and belonging, supporting individual capabilities, and culture, community, and spirituality as key protective systems.
