NAMI Indiana is recruiting volunteer teachers for the NAMI Homefront program.
This program has been taught around the country but is new to Indiana. The NAMI Homefront educational program is free and held over six 2-hour sessions throughout a 6-week period and will be on an online platform (at this time).
The program is designed for families, caregivers and friends of military service members and veterans with mental health conditions. The ideal teacher is someone with lived experience having a caring role in a Veteran/ Service Member’s life with a mental health condition and the ability to share their story to assist others who are seeking support in their current situation. The class covers bio-psycho-social dimensions of mental health, stages of emotional reactions of family members, symptoms and biology of mental health conditions, understanding trauma and understanding veterans, interventions and common medications, understanding healthcare systems (VA and civilian), crisis preparation and response, challenges and self-care, and most importantly sharing personal stories.
A caring and empathetic demeanor with the ability to stay on track with the course curriculum is important. A teacher does not need to have an in-depth knowledge of the topics but a basic understanding. Training will be a 2-day period online and cover all that is needed to know. NAMI has created the curriculum, scripts, and materials all approved by leaders in the mental health community.
