The Early Childhood initiative has been a part of the Hamilton County System of Care since 2018. To date, this initiative has produced an assistive document for child care providers and families regarding early childhood development (Thrive 3 to 5) and created the first county-specific webpage on Early Childhood Mental Health held by Child Care Answers.
Current Early Childhood Initiative - The ‘Bridging The Gap: Between pregnancy and the fourth trimester’ project is about ensuring access to supportive, quality care and helping address how to bridge the gap between pregnancy and the fourth trimester. Access does not only mean available spots; access is also a route to finding what care environments fit best with a family’s culture. With the busy, active lives led by residents in Hamilton County, there becomes a challenge in finding care that fits their family definition of ‘quality’.

‘Early Childhood’ is generally defined as from birth to age 5, but some sources extend this up to age 8. Recognizing that the brain and development of a child at ages 0 and 8 vary in great ways, the Early Childhood Initiative through A Healthier Hamilton County: Systems of Care does include up to age 8 in consideration of projects.
The System of Care consortium has recognized that there is not as much knowledge of resources for youth 0 to 5 as there are once these children head to school in our community. Further discussion revealed that there are many layers and reasons to why this is. These reasons are then addressed through a project, completed one at a time.
The Early Childhood Initiative has been ongoing and consistent in the Hamilton County Systems of Care since 2018. Even as the projects are completed, the Initiative remains so that early childhood can continue to be a focal point of A Healthier Hamilton County: Systems of Care.
